Habitat for Humanity Uganda (HFHU) Home construction is strictly carried out in districts where Habitat affiliates (Community Projects) exist.

HFHU is currently building in the districts of Mukono, Luwero, Nakasongola, Masindi and Ibanda.

Mukono
Habitat has partnered with over 200 families in Mukono since 1998. Current projects in the district, located 45 minutes east of the capital Kampala, include; The Stanbic Bank Village where 31 homes have been built. HFHU in partnership with Stanbic Bank plans to provide 45 housing units in the village. The project, solely funded by Stanbic bank will mainly benefit widow headed households.

The Bead for Life Village project: This HFHU/Bead for Life partnership project will also provide 100 homes for mainly widows, most of them affected by HIV/AIDS. 54 homes have been built since the project started. The partnership with Bead for Life seeks to provide an opportunity for families served by Bead for Life to take a step away from poverty through home ownership. Bead for Life, a non-governmental organization has taught these families to turn paper into beautiful beads (jewelry) which they sell to earn an income.

Outside the two projects, HFHU also continues to build with qualifying families in Mukono who own land.

Luwero
Started in May 2000, HFHU through the Luwero affiliate has to-date partnered with over 113 families. 45 of the families are located in a block land (housing estate), the rest have their homes built on individual family plots.

Nakasongola

The Nakasongola affiliate was born out of a need to reach families affected by HIV/AIDS. It started as a result of a partnership between Habitat for Humanity (HFH) and Opportunity International (OI). HFH/OI work in the affiliate combines health, business, life skills, succession planning, legal rights and housing. In providing housing, HFHU’s objective has been to accelerate rebuilding of homes in communities heavily hit by HIV/AIDS. The HFHU Nakasongola affiliate was officially started in July 2004. Today, 59 families (most of them widow or orphan headed households) affected by HIV/AIDS have partnered with the program to attain simple, decent and affordable homes.

Masindi
The Masindi Affiliate, started in 1993, is located North-West of Uganda’s capital –Kampala. Originally, the projects beneficiaries came from within Masindi town with a few coming from its outskirts. In 2006, the Masindi affiliate took on two other adjacent affiliates; Budongo and Pakanyi also in Masindi district.

The Masindi affiliate has to-date partnered with over 250 families. Over 100 of these families have since paid off their housing loans. Through the revolving fund, the money has since been used for more house construction in the district. Like in other HFHU affiliates, the homes are built on both individual plots and on block-lands/Housing Estates for families without land. The affiliate has two block-lands (Kisiita & Katama) with a total of 120 families in them.

Ibanda
The Ibanda Central Affiliate was started in 1996 and received full affiliate status in November 2001. The Affiliate is located in Ibanda district in Western Uganda –Ankole Region. Since its inception, the affiliate has been one of the countries best performing with mortgage repayments ranging between 94 – 100%. The affiliate has partnered with over 20 families to-date.

Apart from the above, other districts in the country with a Habitat for Humanity presence include Palisa, Mbale, Sironko, Bugiri, Iganga, Mayuge, Kamuli, Jinja in the east, Wakiso in central and Hoima, Kasese, Bundibugyo, Bushenyi in the western part of the country. Construction is temporarily suspended in these districts but could resume in the near future.

HFHU has partnered with over Four thousand, five hundred (4,500) families throughout the country.
